This photo of South food activist Shira Breen, s.t.a.r.t. advisor Charles Johnson-Nixon and Chef/Food Activist Bryant Terry was taken at the 2012 Healthy Food Summit.  Mr. Terry is part of the American Chef Corps, an initiative to make food part of the diplomatic process.  Mr. Terry, author of “The Inspired Vegan,” encouraged us to understand that healthy food should be an everyday right and not a privilege.   He asked us to listen again to “the brilliance of the seasons and earth while we eat.”  Mr. Terry inspired us to become activist citizens–to look at the larger structural inequalities that keep people from living wholesome lives.  Solutions to food insecurity must be found, he said, in the wisdom of the community.  He pointed out that a 2005 Berkeley Media study found that $1 million an hour is spent in the United States on encouraging young people to eat poor foods.  We must, he urged, develop “food IQ” and honor the centrality of food–and healthy food–in the process of building community.
