s.t.a.r.t. leaders Kin Ali, Hibo Ali and Maryan Garane with Civil Rights Activist Dr. Josie Johnson and s.t.a.r.t. founder Freesia Towle at the 10th Headscarf Society Tealit on Saturday, October 28, 2012.  Hibo Ali provided a headscarf wrapping demonstration to over 100 women who came together for an afternoon of tea and healing.  Maryan Garane was one of ten “Amazing Grace” storytellers (including Dr. Josie Johnson) who shared how they have overcome a life challenge and who gave them support.  Maryan shared a very touching story about how she believed she had to give up her culture and her hijab to fit in at her school.  With support from Umoja, a cultural affinity group that emphasizes the strengths of being a person of African descent, and s.t.a.r.t., Maryan began to discover her identity and to gain confidence in being herself.  She now wears her hijab and honors her Muslim heritage, while also preparing to be the first person in her family to attend college.  It was a day of making joyful and healing connections with other women leaders in our community.
